Birdy

1984
USA
Matthew Modine, Nicholas Cage

Type(s) of animal(s) and violence

Dog is killed.  Bird is accidentally killed running into window.

Level of Violence

High.  On-screen.

Is the Violence Integral to the Plot and/or Character Development?

No in the first case, possibly in the second scene.

When Violence Occurs in the Movie

Early on for the first, and later for the second.

Level of Potential Upset to Viewers

I personally found the first scene extremely upsetting.  There was absolutely no hint before the scene of what was coming.  Others have found the second scene upsetting as well, as his relationship to the bird was well-developed beforehand.

Other

An otherwise gripping psychological movie, the single scene of the dog being killed may ruin it for very sensitive viewers.
